STEVEN PECKMAN
Associate Director

Steven Peckman is the Associate Director of the Center. Prior to joining the Center, he worked for more than 10 years in the UCLA, Office for Protection of Research Subjects as Associate Director-Human Subject Research, responsible for five Institutional Review Boards (IRBs) and their review of the ethical and legal conduct of human subjects research, creation of a campus-wide education and certification program, membership on Independent Safety Monitoring Boards, and informed consent monitoring. Peckman is a peer reviewer for the Hastings Center and the journal “Accountability in Research” and has published on the ethics of human subject protection, including a paper for President Clinton’s National Bioethics Advisory Commission (NBAC). He has been a keynote speaker on human research issues at international conferences on topics such as: the ethical principles of biomedical and social-behavioral human research, ethical and legal research requirements for research with human embryonic stem cells, human biological and genetic material, clinical trials & adverse event reporting, informed consent, international research, and research with vulnerable subject populations. Peckman is also an IRB consultant for various institutions as well as the Department of Health and Human Services-Office for Human Research Protection (OHRP).
