RANDOLPH WALL, PhD
Professor of Microbiology, Immunology and Molecular Genetics

Randolph Wall is Distinguished Professor of Microbiology, Immunology and Molecular Genetics, a founding member of the Molecular Biology Institute and a member of the UCLA School of Medicine Faculty since 1972. He received his PhD in 1970 at Indiana University for studies in animal virology. As a postdoctoral fellow with Dr. James Darnell, he discovered one of the fundamental processes governing the production of mRNA in all eukaryotic organisms. His Laboratory at UCLA was one of the first in the world to clone and characterize antibody genes. He then went on to define the molecular mechanisms regulating antibody gene expression and controlling B cell development. His subsequent research isolated key genes controlling the activation and survival of antibody-producing B cells and identified a new genetic pathway leading to the most prevalent B cell malignancies called B cell lymphomas. He recently discovered a novel type of DNA methylation that appears to be involved in genetic reprograming in embryonic stem cell maturation. Dr. Wall is also an intellectual property expert.
